BASICS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SENIORS
and
CONCEPTS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SENIORS
These on-line courses can be a useful base for anyone working in senior care facilities. The "Basics Course" covers beginner anatomy of bones and muscles, physiology of heart and lung function and simple exercise science to explain the important aspects of movement for older adults with health or movement challenges. It has 5 sections and an evaluation.
The "Concepts Course" adds more specific content for working with senior clients in exercise programs. It is still mainly a theory based course in 2 sections with an evaluation.
BCRPA
FITNESS
THEORY
This is a preparation course for those who wish to go on and become fitness instructors in British Columbia. The content is based on the FLC (Fitness Leadership Canada) guidelines. It prepares students to write the BCRPA exam. It is also a good course for anyone wishing to better understand how to get the most out of their own fitness regime.
WEIGHT
TRAINING
COURSE
This course is open to those who are registered through BCRPA and wish to become qualified in weight training. The pre-requisite is to have passed the BCRPA Theory exam, a first aid and cpr course and have a leader ID# through BCRPA. It can also be used by BCRPA registered instructors who want to use it for CE credits (16 CEC). This course is also based on FLC guidelines.
AQUAFIT
COURSE
OLDER ADULT COURSE
IN
CLASS
This course is open to those who are registered through BCRPA and wish to become qualified in aquatic exercise training. A pre-requisite is to have passed the BCRPA Theory exam, a first aid and cpr course and have a leader ID# through BCRPA. It is also important for anyone taking this course to have experienced at least 5 aquafit classes in the water. Previously registered instructors may use it for CE credits (16 CEC).
This course is based on FLC guidelines.
This course is aimed at experienced fitness instructors or personal trainers who would like to work with an older population. It is an extensive course worth 20 CEC. The full qualification as an Older Adult Instructor requires an additional exam and evaluation through BCRPA. The course is also available to CFES instructors who want the Active Aging qualification. The course is based on FLC guidelines with additional information.
OLDER ADULT COURSE
ON LINE
This is the identical course to the one above except done entirely on the computer. Open to both BCRPA or CFES instructors for credits but it may be used by other organizations also through petition for credits. It is self-paced and can be started at any time.

This 1CEC online workshop gives an overview of how mental awareness training can help reduce fall risks. Dual task training is increasingly being addressed in exercise recommendations for the older population. Ideas for incorporating it into any exercise training are discussed.
This 1CEC online workshop will update instructors on the more recent science behind stretching. Flexibility is important to both movement and posture. There are many ways in which it can be achieved through movement.

This 2CEC online workshop discusses the importance of power in training older adults. Power is lost faster than strength and is a major reason for falls as people age. There are particular methods which can help to improve it.

This 2CEC online workshop offers trainers or instructors ideas on how to help correct or reduce physical asymmetries in clients. Imbalances that can lead to movement problems and falls are often correctable or can be prevented from becoming worse over time.

This 2CEC online workshop reviews joint anatomy and the many ways problem joints can interfere with strengthening programs. Many suggestions are offered for work-arounds when joint issues arise, whether temporary or permanent.

This 3CEC online workshop discusses the topic of bone heath through life. Osteoporosis is often silent but present in many clients and participants. Understanding the risks in training older clients and ways to improve bone health is important for all exercise leaders.

This 3CEC online workshop offers practical suggestions on ways to incorporate negative training to make positive changes to muscle conditioning in older adults. By doing so there is a possibility of reducing falls, improving flexibility and adding years to lives.

MOVEMENT CHALLENGES
FOR
This 4CEC online workshop is in 4 sections which follow the assignments in my Older Adult Course. The first is on walking challenges for older adults. The second part is on squats and their challenges. The third part focuses on fitness testing and interviewing older adults. The final part is on the observation of classes aimed at exercise for older adults.
4 CEC Workshop

YOUR CLIENT
TO
WATER
This 4CEC online workshop is in 3 sections. It is aimed primarily at personal trainers who would like to use the medium of water for training clients. Part 1 has a focus on water principles and how they differ from working in gravity. Part 2 discusses the impact of vertical aquatic training on anatomy and physiology. Part 3 addresses adding equipment, increasing overload and safety considerations in using water for training.
